Dev Explains Why Ubisoft Decided to Revisit the Older Era of Assassin’s Creed with the Upcoming Black Flag Resynced

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is turning out to be one of the finest examples of what a remake of an older, beloved game should be as it not only improves on everything that was in the original 2014 title but manages to evolve it’s gameplay elements to new levels of immersion and interactivity. Everything from the parkour mechanics to the combat system has been refined and improved in more ways than one, easily bringing out a best-in-class gameplay experience among the older era of Assassin’s Creed titles.

And in a recent interview with IGN, Paul Fu, the creative director for the upcoming title, discussed what made Ubisoft go for a re-imagined version of the classic Black Flag: “I think there’s still great value with the classic AC experience, personally, for me, I’m both a fan of the RPG side, but also the action-adventure side of the series,” he said. “There are merits to both, but with Black Flag, there’s such a strong focus on story and character that’s more about the defined narrative. For us, we just wanted to make sure that we keep the spirit of the original game with this remake.”

He also stated that the studio had initially considered remaking the DLCs for the original Black Flag such as Freedom Cry, and explained why they actually decided not to: “We definitely considered adding Black Flag’s DLC content like Freedom Cry, but right from the beginning, we understood that Black Flag would be one of the hardest games to remake in the AC franchise,” said Fu. “There are many reasons behind it – First of all, the world is huge, and it’s a specialized, enabled map that requires a lot of tech that doesn’t really exist anymore. We couldn’t reuse any of the old tech.”

The highly anticipated remake of the classic 2013 title also features a heavily reworked combat system since the original would feel terribly out-of-place in the current-day era of gaming in more ways than one. The new combat mechanics feels a whole lot more fluid and seamless while also featuring a more intuitive HUD with two mini-menus in each bottom corner which allows for seamless switching between the different types of weapons and items.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is slated to be released on July 9th.
