The status of Insomniac Games’ rumored Venom project has become the subject of intense industry debate following a series of conflicting reports regarding its development. While internal documents leaked during a 2023 ransomware attack suggested the title was slated for a 2025 release, that window has closed without an official word from Sony. Now, new comments from within the franchise’s voice cast have ignited concerns that the “Lethal Protector” may have been shelved entirely.
During a recent appearance on the Love it Film podcast, Miles Morales actor Nadji Jeter claimed that the spin-off was once in active development but has since been canceled. According to Jeter, the project’s trajectory changed following the passing of Tony Todd, the legendary actor who voiced the symbiote in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Todd’s performance was a cornerstone of the sequel’s success, and Jeter’s comments suggest the studio may have struggled to find a path forward for a standalone story without his presence.
However, the industry’s internal reporting paints a different picture. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a veteran journalist known for his insight into studio operations, responded to the rumors on ResetEra with a concise rebuttal, stating the claims of cancellation are not true. This leaves the project in a state of limbo, caught between the narrative of a voice actor and the findings of investigative reporting.
Whether the game is truly gone or simply undergoing a significant internal reboot, Insomniac’s immediate focus is clearly elsewhere. The studio is currently preparing for the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, which is scheduled to hit the PlayStation 5 on September 15. With the Spider-Man 2 ending leaving several threads hanging—including the arrival of Cletus Kasady—fans are left to wonder if those stories will eventually be told in a dedicated Venom title or if they will be folded into a potential Spider-Man 3. For now, the future of the symbiote remains one of the biggest question marks in the PlayStation ecosystem.
