Road to Vostok

Road to Vostok is doing some amazing numbers for being an indie game without much publicity behind it, it currently has sold more than 250.000 copies and it seems to be heading to become an amazing PC game for enthusiast of hardcore experiences. For those who aren’t aware of it yet, Road to Vostok is a survival FPS game that blends realistic graphics and a lush landscape together giving a breathtaking experience that will captivate fans of games that deal with Permadeath mechanics. It truly feels like the most logical step to make survival games even ore real, to wipe your save away if you lose.

Road to Vostok is successful

Apparently the developers confirmed some time ago that the costs of development have been recovered and that they have also won more than they expected from it. This is their first game and there’s basically zero fanfare around it, because it was probably lost in the sea of games that Steam often is. There’s tons of things to love, however I’m getting very tired of seeing games going for overly realistic styles without much differences, its really hard to distinguish all of them when you start to analyze them separately.

A ton of charm is lost when realism enters the room, but some people really seem to like this and I can’t blame them, but the surprise lessens with each day that passes because we understand that technology has reached a peak in graphics. The fact that indie developers can harness this power of realism however signifies that triple A games have lost their only footing in case graphics where the only thing they had going for it. Everyone can do it and its nothing special now, so perhaps indie developers should focus more on making unique and fun experiences that look more quirky instead of grim like Road to Vostok.
