Project Zomboid is one of the most important survival sandboxes in the zombie game genre made by an indie developer. This game is extremely popular and known by many, which makes the current news about a zero day exploit fix a huge relief. It is scary how games can now be weaponized by malicious actors to get more control over your systems remotely, we have had cases of those issues happening with popular games like Call of Duty. One of the most popular incidents regarding hacking exploits was the Dark Souls series, known for its shaky net code that opened the door to trojans.
Project Zomboid gets patched
Apparently, this exploit was caused via modding, I always think that modding is an excellent thing to have in games but it’s also a double edged sword when updates happen to be insecure. Apparently, someone leveraged the popular True MoooZIC mod to make some add-ons with soundtracks of popular games, however all of these add-ons only caused the creation of malicious code in directories outside of the game, exploiting a flaw in the games code itself. This only affected Build 42, but Build 41 remained unaffected by this.
Here is the list of mods affected, so make sure you don’t install any of these and if you have them, delete them as quick as you can. The team behind Project Zomboid did an amazing job catching wind of this and solving it as quick as possible, huge corporations like Bandai Namco even stiffled efforts by From Software to patch a critical vulnerability in a beloved series. This shows that developers like those of Project Zomboid are people we should never lose in the industry, if it weren’t for indies I don’t think real gaming would even exist as we know it. This is a huge win for indie developers.
