Clair Obscur Expedition 33 was a massive success that took the world by storm, and now it reached a new record of around 8 million copies being sold right around the anniversary of the game. I had a blast with this entry, and despite the controversy surrounding it the team managed to fix all issues that it dealt with, originally made by Final Fantasy fans you can clearly see that there is tons of inspiration from the golden days of the franchise before it became the Action RPG series of MMO people know. It has even made Square Enix considering sending Final Fantasy to its roots.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 breaks record
This new sales record being broken is a sign that we are in the era of turn based RPGs and people want more of them. While Square Enix is busy following trends by making Final Fantasy into weird genres it has never been before, the studio behind Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is focusing on cultivating a brand that appeals to the core fans and remains loyal to the original vision. They have even stated that they won’t cave in to the opinion of outsiders and that those who supported the game will be respected.
Hopefully this promise remains true, because I would like to see another game like this mechanically as the evolution of Turn Based RPGs shown by Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is quite an interesting one. Some people believe the genre is limited, and that turn based games are a thing of the past, but you can keep implementing new stuff, you can keep experimenting to create something wild. Its a matter of risk and not many companies are willing to take risk nowadays, which often ends in new IPs that feel like more of the same you have already played before.
