The Xbox ROG Ally X, which is already one of the best handheld gaming PCs that you can buy right now, is about to get even better this April as Microsoft is set to add Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) upscaling to the device which can result in performance improvements of 25% or more. The new upscaling tech will provide higher FPS courtesy of advanced AI processing which will allow the ROG Ally X to render visuals at lower resolutions and scale them up accordingly.
Microsoft has also demonstrated the overall performance improvements in Forza Horizon 5 which was running at 35 fps without Auto SR but the frames jumped to around 51 fps with the new upscaler active. You can check out the demonstration in a video posted on X/Twitter by Kotaku’s Ethan Gach and see the impressive performance gains that are coming to the ROG Ally X next month. According to Microsoft, the Auto SR will result in “an almost 30% frame rate boost all while maintaining nearly equivalent visual quality” which is pretty great and means that all your games are guaranteed to run significantly smoother on the handheld.
However it’s currently unknown whether the upscaling tech will arrive in the relatively lower-powered ROG Xbox Ally too and perhaps we’ll have to wait for further official confirmation.
And although the Auto SR, just like any other upscaling technology out there, can indeed bring about a noticeably lower level of visual fidelity but it won’t nearly matter as much on a handheld as it does on a much bigger screen like in Desktops or even in the case of Consoles. Because the pixel density matters more to the overall image quality than resolutions and that’s why 1080p on a 21.5 inch looks way better and crisper than the same resolution on a much bigger screen like 1080p on a 32 inch or even 1440p at 32 inch.
