A new, unannounced Fallout project appears to have been canceled, according to comments made by veteran industry journalist Jeff Gerstmann. During a recent episode of The Jeff Gerstmann Show, the former GameSpot editorial director and Giant Bomb co-founder revealed he had knowledge of a Fallout “thing” in development at a Microsoft-owned studio outside of Bethesda, noting that it is “no longer going to see the light of day.”
While details regarding the nature of the project remain scarce, the report has naturally stirred conversation among the franchise’s dedicated fanbase. For years, players have clamored for a return to the post-apocalyptic wasteland, with recent internet speculation fixated on potential remasters of Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. However, Gerstmann’s assessment offers a more somber outlook on that specific project’s future, suggesting that if it was indeed in the works, it has been halted.
It is important to note that Gerstmann did not identify the studio involved or confirm whether the game was a mainline entry or a spin-off. While fans often look toward Obsidian Entertainment—the studio behind New Vegas—as the ideal candidate for a non-Bethesda Fallout experience, there is currently no evidence linking them to the alleged canceled project. Furthermore, Gerstmann acknowledged separate, long-standing rumors that a Fallout 3 remaster might be outsourced to an external developer, though he suggested the canceled project is likely an unannounced spin-off rather than one of those anticipated remakes.
Bethesda Game Studios remains the primary steward of the franchise, though their current development slate is heavily focused on Starfield and the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda executive Todd Howard has previously emphasized that the company is heavily invested in the Fallout brand, particularly in the wake of the successful television adaptation. Despite the disappointment this news may bring, it underscores the intense, ongoing fan demand for new content within the Fallout universe, keeping the spotlight firmly on how and when the series will return to gaming consoles.
