The worlds of Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch and Square Enix’s NieR: Automata have officially collided. Starting today, March 10, and running through March 23, players can access a new collaboration event featuring five premium character skins that bring the iconic android aesthetics of NieR into the hero shooter.
This update introduces distinct, high-fidelity skins that reimagine several fan-favorite heroes. Players can now equip Kiriko as the legendary 2B—complete with her Pod 042—and Wuyang as 9S, accompanied by Pod 153. The collection also includes Vendetta as the formidable A2, Mercy as Commander White, and Lifeweaver as Adam.
Beyond the character redesigns, the collaboration expands the game’s atmosphere with a specially themed lobby. This area was co-designed by prominent NieR: Automata artists Kimihiko Fujisaka and Koda Kazuma. To accompany the visual changes, the event introduces a dedicated set of challenges that allow players to earn exclusive rewards, including themed name cards, player titles, and a specialized weapon charm.
This crossover arrives during a pivotal period for Overwatch. Following an extensive rebranding effort earlier this year, the game has shifted its focus toward a deeper narrative and a consistent rollout of new heroes. The decision to partner with NieR: Automata—a franchise that, despite approaching its 10th anniversary, maintains a massive cultural footprint—aligns with the developers’ current strategy of high-profile collaborations.
Historically, these partnerships have proven effective for engagement, with previous events featuring franchises such as Cowboy Bebop, One Punch Man, and various Blizzard properties like World of Warcraft and Diablo. As Overwatch continues its aggressive post-rebrand expansion, the addition of the NieR collection serves as both a celebration of a beloved action title and a clear indication of the developer’s commitment to frequent, content-rich updates. Fans looking to secure these premium items should note that the event is limited to a two-week window, concluding on March 23.
