Arrowhead Game Studios has confirmed that PC players will soon see a significant reduction in the storage space required for Helldivers 2, as the developer prepares to transition the game’s slimmed-down beta build into the new standard client. After months of maintaining a massive footprint on Windows, the move aims to bring the PC version’s efficiency in line with its console counterparts.
The current standard PC build of the cooperative shooter demands a staggering 154 GB of storage space—a figure that has long been a point of contention for players with limited drive capacity. According to Arrowhead, this heavy requirement was originally a technical necessity to ensure the game remained playable on traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). While modern SSDs have become the industry standard, the initial architecture prioritized compatibility for older hardware, resulting in the bloated file size.
This disparity was particularly noticeable when compared to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game, which occupy approximately 25 GB each. To bridge this gap, the development team introduced an experimental PC beta build in December 2025. Following weeks of stress testing and technical feedback from the community, the studio is now confident enough in the stability of this optimized version to make it the mandatory client for all PC users later this month.
The update is expected to free up over 100 GB of space for most users, a welcome relief as the game’s post-launch content continues to expand. While the studio has not provided a specific date for the rollout, the transition marks a significant milestone in the game’s technical lifecycle. By streamlining the file architecture, Arrowhead is effectively removing one of the last remaining hurdles for PC players who have had to manage their storage aggressively to keep the Galactic War effort installed.
