Fortnite’s Save the World Finally Goes Free-to-Play Next Month

After years of speculation and community requests, Epic Games has officially confirmed that Fortnite’s original PvE mode, Save the World, will transition to a free-to-play model on April 16. The tower defense experience, which tasks players with defending their bases from waves of zombies behind a fortified storm shield, had largely taken a backseat to the explosive, global success of the Battle Royale component since 2017.

This shift marks a significant pivot for the studio. By finally removing the paywall, Epic Games is clearly attempting to revitalize the mode and bolster its active player count, potentially creating the necessary momentum for long-awaited content updates. Alongside the transition, the developer has confirmed that Save the World will officially launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, expanding the mode’s reach across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms.

To build anticipation for the April release, Epic is kicking off a community goal event. Players are encouraged to register their accounts on the official Save the World website to help reach a collective target of one million registrations. Hitting specific milestones—300,000, 700,000, and eventually one million participants—will unlock a series of digital rewards, including the Jess banner, the Kyle’s Construction spray, and the Snowstriker hero.

Veteran players—often referred to as “Founders”—will remember when the mode was a consistent source of earnable V-Bucks, a system that has been significantly nerfed over the years through the removal of daily login rewards and collection book incentives. While the golden age of earning currency within the mode has passed, the move to free-to-play signals a fresh start for the project that started it all. Whether this update finally delivers the substantial, consistent content additions that the player base has demanded for years remains to be seen, but the doors are now swinging open for a new generation of players to experience the foundations of the Fortnite universe.
