One of the best things that have come out of modern graphical technologies are upscaling like NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR which enables games to run at more framerates with a minimal sacrifice on overall visual fidelity and the newly released Resident Evil Requiem is going to be the first title to utilize Sony’s own PSSR upscaling on the PS5 Pro. Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect of both PS5 and PS5 Pro, has stated on the official Playstation Blog that the new and upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) will be available worldwide to all PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks.
According to Cerny, PSSR analyzes all the pixels in an image and upscales them, which results in a boost in the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date.
“We’ve been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm,” he stated.
“We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem — shipping today — is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high.”
Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin, the Senior Manager Engine Development Support Section R&D Foundational Technology Department, also commented:
“The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers.”
So what it all boils down to is sharper image quality with great fluid performance all around and minimal loss in detail, which is what upscalers are all about.
The standard edition of Resident Evil Requiem comes at $69.99 for Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S while the Deluxe edition of Resident Evil Requiem costs $79.99 and includes five bonus costumes, four weapon skins, two screen filters, one audio pack and more in-game contents.
