One of the biggest announcements in yesterday’s State of Play event was the upcoming remake of the original God of War trilogy which means we’ll be able to experience all the earlier titles in the series brought to life in glorious current-day technologies. If you’ve already played the older games which date back to the PS2 era with both first and the second God of War titles, you’ll definitely be glad to revisit those in modern visual flourishes and if you haven’t played those titles, you’re surely in for an unforgettable treat.
The official announcement on the remake was followed by TC Carson, the original voice actor for Kratos in the earlier games, revealing that while the remake is currently in active development, it’s still in it’s early stages so it’s going to take a bit of time before we get to see anything substantial from the upcoming games. So in hindsight, it looks like we’re a long way off from getting a proper gameplay reveal or similar contents however anyone who has played even some of the original God of War titles knows that the wait is totally worth it.
Besides the highly engrossing, over-arching narrative that focused on the tormented journey of Kratos, the God of War trilogy had also succeeded in being pretty great hack-n-slash titles that actually stood tall alongside the Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta series of games as some of the iconic examples in the genre. And although the newer God of War games have tons of great action and storytelling, many players missed the far more combat-heavy titles of the original trilogy and from that perspective, the remakes could breathe fresh air not just into the franchise but also to the current landscape in the industry.
So yes, the upcoming God of War remakes certainly have the potential to be absolutely Godly, and result in thoroughly great experiences for both new fans as well as players from the PS2 era.
