Marathon might be the last hope of Bungie, and their attempt to hit the extraction shooter genre has been quite obvious. Chasing trends and stealing artwork is the only thing they seem capable of doing, a far cry from the Bungie we know and loved. Marathon has been victim of perhaps one of the most egregious trends that everyone is trying to copy right now in Live Service titles, that being Extraction Shooters. It is also a Live Service game that asks for money to play it, something that sets a precedent for failure in a way that makes Concord look good.
Marathon has issues
UI Elements are unclear, Voice Chat does not seem to work, and to make things worse sometimes performance issues strike, these are some of the errors this game deals with and things can get worse. Marathon needs to capitalize on the current relevancy wave it is experiencing if it wants to survive, but seeing how Highguard failed despite being a free game, and how games like Concord have set a precedent for the live service sub genre, another failure is expected. It will be decided in a matter of weeks, if gamers don’t like this then its dead on arrival.
It is important to not that Sony has cut the marketing funding for the game, perhaps due to the controversy generating enough buzz around it, we have to ensure that the artists that have been affected by this blatant stealing have been compensated. Yet in today’s gaming industry things seem rather bleak in some aspects, age verification strikes from the shadows, and a ton of issues like that of microtransations seem to infest most games people play. Hopefully winds of change bring some positivity to the gaming market, but sometimes we need to remain realistic when analyzing the current state of an industry.
