Even with GTA 6 in the horizon and it’s official marketing campaign about to kick off this summer of 2026, it’s predecessor GTA 5 still continues to soar with the open world third person action adventure title now confirmed to have sold over an enormous 225 million copies. According to the company’s quarterly earnings release, Take-Two interactive has revealed that GTA 5, a game that came out way back in 2013, has sold a total of 225 million copies so far.
Rockstar Games’ GTA 5 was always in the top 10 list of the highest selling videogames of all time, and the recent sales milestone is yet another testament to it’s enduring quality that continues to resonate with gamers of different generations (three different console and PC generations, to be precise).
GTA 5 had managed to refine and overhaul all the gameplay elements from it’s predecessor Grand Theft Auto 4 (which is yet another timeless videogame experience), from the gunplay to the intuitive cover system plus a fun and enjoyable narrative which had made GTA 5 a bona fide open world third person experience that, to this day remains as memorable as it was during it’s launch. Also, the Enhanced version of GTA 5 which was released last year that added Ray Traced lighting and basically brought the game to the current-gen sheen and polish, has undoubtedly helped bring lots of new players to the game.
In other news of Grand Theft Auto, publisher Take-Two has revealed that support for GTA Online, the multiplayer component for GTA 5, will continue after the launch of GTA 6.
“At the same time, I have every reason to believe we’ll continue to support GTA Online. There’s a great community that loves it, that stays engaged. And again, in this quarter, Rockstar has shown that when you deliver great additional content, despite how long GTA Online has been in the market, people show up,” CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated.
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
