The God of War franchise is one of the biggest IP’s from Sony and the newer games in the series, starting from 2018’s God of War and it’s follow-up God of War: Ragnarok have proven themselves to garner the same Godly status as well as the two games have generated a combined sales revenue of over $1.4 billion so far. First spotted by Tech4Gamers, an update on LinkedIn from the Senior Managing Producer for Art at Santa Monica Studios, Rich Fleider confirms that both God of War 2018 and God of War: Ragnarok have surpassed over a billion dollars in total sales which is staggering and a testament to how enormously popular the franchise is.
The LinkedIn update states: “God of War (2018) & God of War: Ragnarök (Sony PlayStation) – Record-breaking Metacritic scores & $1.4B+ combined sales.” Fleider was part of the largest art team in the studio which consisted of over 70 internal artists plus 100s of external partners all around the world, these numbers show the massive scale and ambition of the newer God of War titles.
Of course, God of War is also one of the most long running franchises on the Sony platform with the very first game dating way back to the Playstation 2, so from that perspective it perfectly makes sense why the series has become so gigantic.
One of the defining characteristics of the newer titles is the stark departure from the hack-n-slash nature of the earlier God of War games to a more story-driven (while still having lots of action) gameplay experience. This shift in direction has resulted in some of the most memorable storytelling moments in the current era of gaming which showcases the potential of the medium for crafting experiences that are unmatched in any other forms of entertainment.
A Remake of the older, hack-n-slash based God of War trilogy has also been announced during the recent State of Play event.
