Blizzard Accidentally Reveals Nier: Automata Collaboration for Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment appears to have jumped the gun on its next major crossover, briefly uploading and then deleting a teaser video that confirms Nier: Automata is coming to Overwatch. The leak occurred via the game’s official YouTube channel, where a short clip showcased iconic elements from Yoko Taro’s dystopian masterpiece integrated into the hero shooter’s aesthetic. Although the footage was scrubbed from official channels within minutes, the rapid response from the community ensured that high-quality mirrors and screenshots of the collaboration reached every corner of social media.

The centerpiece of this collaboration focuses on a high-detail skin for Kiriko, who is set to receive a costume modeled after the protagonist, 2B. This choice follows Blizzard’s established pattern of assigning high-profile guest characters to their most popular supports, much like the previous Cowboy Bebop and One-Punch Man events. Fans have also identified potential cosmetics for other heroes, suggesting that while 2B is the headliner, the event will likely feature a broader range of robotic and gothic-themed aesthetics drawn from the Nier universe.

This partnership marks another aggressive step in Blizzard’s strategy to maintain player engagement through “prestige” collaborations. By tapping into the Nier fanbase, Blizzard is targeting a specific demographic of players who value high-concept character design and thematic storytelling. For Nier creator Yoko Taro, this is a familiar move, as his characters have previously appeared in titles ranging from Final Fantasy XIV to SoulCalibur VI. The synergy between the two properties is evident, as Overwatch’s futuristic setting provides a natural backdrop for the androids of YoRHa.

While an official release date was not explicitly confirmed in the leaked footage, the polish of the assets suggests that the event is imminent, likely scheduled for the mid-season update or the start of the next competitive cycle. Players can expect the standard monetization structure for this crossover, featuring a mix of premium shop bundles for the primary skins and a series of limited-time challenges that offer themed charms, sprays, and titles. Blizzard has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the leak, but given the visibility of the mistake, a formal “re-reveal” is expected within the week.
