In a shockingly disappointing update, Ubisoft has effectively cancelled the upcoming Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake which was supposed to be released this year. After more than half a decade of development involving multiple studios, the modernized version of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is confirmed to never see the light of day which is deeply disheartening in more ways than one. And now, the publisher has addressed the fans of the Prince of Persia community in a post on their X/Twitter account, which is what the fans deserve after waiting for a title that was first announced back in 2025.
“To the Prince of Persia community, we wanted to share this with you directly,” reads a statement attributed to Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia team.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We know this is deeply disappointing. The game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it.
“While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And, we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.
“Prince of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us, and this decision does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise.
“Thank you for your passion, patience and love for Prince of Persia.”
While Ubisoft didn’t exactly reveal why the remake was taking so long in development or anything in the same vein, at least it acknowledged that the game was having a tricky development and wouldn’t really live up to the same standards of the original 2004 classic which would’ve been a shame. Also, the cancellation does make sense considering after more than 5 years of active development, Ubisoft couldn’t show anything from the game like screenshots, gameplay or even any cinematic.
