After an image of a collectible statue leaked online depicting Edward Kenway, the protagonist of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake, publisher Ubisoft has effectively acknowledged the existence of the upcoming title in their Twitter/X account with a humorous GTA San Andreas meme.
While not really an official confirmation by any stretch of the imagination, Ubisoft’s response to the photo is at least suggestive of the fact that they didn’t want the figurine to be spotted by fans which is also expected to come out sometimes this year. Which indirectly means that the publisher wants to shadowdrop the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake without any earlier formal announcements, pretty much what Bethesda did with their Oblivion Remaster last year.
The Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake was previously expected to be released in the first half of this year but now it seems the game has been likely delayed by another year, according to Insider Gaming. While the news is certainly a bit disappointing, if the extra time results in a more polished gameplay experience, it can be a fair trade-off. The recent delay of the modernized version of the acclaimed 2013 title may also be due to the massive restructuring process that’s currently underway in Ubisoft across all it’s studios and franchises.
The upcoming Remake will also reportedly contain a significantly overhauled combat system with an emphasize on RPG mechanics and gears that lean heavily into the more modern entries of the series like the post-Assassin’s Creed Origins batch of titles. However, the Black Flag Remake is also reported to cut out the modern day segments which were present in the original game, a move that’s sure to upset many players as those missions had a significant impact on the overarching narrative of the franchise and connected the past events with the present day happenings.
While at the same time, the Remake is reported to include bonus story contents to the Edward Kenway sections such as additional story missions focused on pirate Mary Read which didn’t make it to the original Black Flag in 2013.
