Highguard was quite the messy reveal at The Game Awards 2025, and the biggest thing of it all was the fact that it took the finale slot, entirely for free it seems. The fact the the people behind it has decided that the Game Awards was enough publicity for it is quite crazy, and it might be one of the biggest gambles in the hero shooter space besides Concord. Now, I don’t expect the game to actually fail that quickly, perhaps the team is confident enough that it will draw a ton of people in despite the backlash, after all its a free live service game like many of those addictive ones.
Highguard might have an ace
Highguard is being regarded as a dead on arrival game by some, and honestly I can kinda see it based on what happened many weeks ago. Everyone expected some massive reveal and yet, we only got a generic hero shooter that nobody asked for. I want to believe that the people behind it put some effort into trying to do things and that they wished to be fair to players by not monetizing the game in a terrible way, but that’s a big ask for this kind of market. People are turning back to retro games and older titles in their backlog thanks to the sea of live service games nobody wishes to play.
Hopefully Highguard just happens to be the beginning of a more fair and respectful live service model that treats players properly instead of treating them as cash cows to be milked for money. We don’t need more greed in an industry that is ridden with many problems, we just need to move forward and create something better for everyone. If you still want to give Highguard a shot, remember that you will be able to play it on January 26th, just a week away from us.
