It seems the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day which is a prequel to the original Gears trilogy of titles that’s being made by The Coalition, will take players of the older games on a trip down memory lane as according to creative director Matt Searcy, it will have the same “tone and vibes of the original games.”
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Searcy has stated: “This is our most ambitious game yet, entirely built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5.”
“We wanted to build a game that feels like Gears but plays like new. E-Day is a celebration of both the past and what’s to come in the future,” Searcy said. He also added that the upcoming title has “touchpoints in the lore for us to build from” while still having “enough room” to “bring new elements and ideas in.”
His words indicate that the devs are going for a best-of-both-worlds experience with Gears of War: E-Day by fusing the best parts from both eras of Gears in a sumptuous new experience.
The iconic Gears of War series which is also widely known as Gears, is responsible for introducing several new gameplay mechanics in the third person action adventure/shooter mold that have gone on to become essential features for the entire genre, such as the dynamic and intuitive cover system that allows players to use most in-game objects for taking cover and other gameplay opportunities. And even though the last mainline entry in the series, titled Gears 5 received rather mixed reception, the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day could likely see a grand comeback for the franchise in a huge way.
Gears of War: E-Day was first announced at the Xbox showcase in 2024 and is set to be a prequel to the original trilogy where fans will get to play much younger versions of the series’ protagonists such as Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. The original actors are also confirmed to reprise their roles in the upcoming game.
