The longtime Elder Scrolls Loremaster Kurt Kuhlmann, who had been working at Bethesda for over two decades, has revealed some interesting insights on The Elder Scrolls 6 that could’ve taken the narrative of the upcoming title to a whole different direction. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Kuhlmann revealed that he had expected to be the lead designer for the Elder Scrolls 6 due to his massive experience with both the studio and the series of games but the project was getting pushed back in favor of other titles that were being made by the studio.
“After Fallout 4, we didn’t go to TES6, we made Fallout 76, and then even then, we didn’t make TES6, we made Starfield, which became this extremely long project compared to other ones. So from my point of view, I’ve been waiting like 11 years to be the lead on TES6,” he says. “Bruce [Nesmith] and I had been the co-leads on Skyrim. I think most people would call it a successful project, so I thought that it wasn’t unreasonable for me to think that I could be a successful lead on TES6. It wasn’t just my expectation—I had been told that that was going to happen.”
Kuhlmann also stated that he originally drew inspiration from a classic Star Wars film for the direction of the plot in The Elder Scrolls 6: “I had in my mind that TES6 was going to be like The Empire Strikes Back,” and involved the Thalmor to be the main villains who would gain control over all of Tamriel by the end of the game and would set up The Elder Scrolls 7.
“So you’ve preserved hope for the future, but overall it looks like the Thalmor are on the march”.
He also said that he knows that the theme and tone of that kind of a narrative wouldn’t really fit the Elder Scrolls series, based on all the previous titles.
“That’s not a good way to end a game and say, yeah, we’ll see you in 10, 15 years.”
Besides GTA 6, another game that can easily generate a monumental level of hype and anticipation, for all the good reasons, is none other than The Elder Scrolls 6 which is the successor of Skyrim, a genre-redefining experience that’s widely and rightfully considered as one of the greatest games of all time. When Skyrim first came out, it basically rewrote and redefined the rules of the Open World RPG gameplay sandbox and players and fans alike would expect The Elder Scrolls 6 to do the same or even more when it comes out.
