The great director behind the original Knights of the Old Republic, Casey Hudson, has moved recently to contain some rampant speculation regarding the extended timeline for development of his newly announced project, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Following the game’s surprise reveal at The Game Awards 2025, industry reports popped up saying the ambitious RPG might not see a release date until 2030-and Hudson has said that such a timeline was “wrong”.
This conservative timetable mainly arose because of the apparent scale of the title and, also, because it was presented in a pre-rendered cinematic trailer, which usually means the project is still in the early phases of production. Industry veteran Jason Schreier, citing the complexities of modern AAA game production, called 2030 an “optimistic” target for the game launch. Such long timelines, while demoralizing for the fan base, had already become standard for major new IPs following their first announcements.
Hudson, who heads Arcanaut Studios, the title’s own developer, immediately rushed to social media to correct the claims, reassuring fans that it would not be that long of a wait. With no clear indication of a year, Hudson jokingly commented that he was “not getting any younger”, implying strong intent to ship the game well before the close of the decade. Such an active involvement by the creative head was intended to shape expectations and sustain some of the huge enthusiasm accrued since its reveal.
While a 2027 release date is generally ruled out considering that the announcement trailer has no official year attached to it, Hudson’s comment suggests even much stronger that development is headed toward a release in 2028 or 2029. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is inarguably among the most significant projects presently under development at Lucasfilm Games as it returns to a much-loved era, with one of its original creative stewards at the head. As development continues, scrutiny will only increase on when the title will eventually ship.
