The Rockstar Games firing incident is now taking a new turn as the company has just officially addressed the actual reason behind their decision to dismiss more than 30 employees this past month. In a statement to IGN, Rockstar Games has given their reasoning behind the decision to fire the employees, which reads:
“Rockstar Games took action against a small group of individuals, across the UK and internationally, who distributed and discussed confidential information (including specific game features from upcoming and unannounced titles) in a public forum, in breach of company policy and their legal obligations. Claims that these dismissals were linked to union membership or activities are entirely false and misleading.”
Now the only official title currently being developed by Rockstar, is none other than Grand Theft Auto 6, although there have been news and rumors about a possible remaster of GTA 4 as well as a current-gen upgrade of Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s statement implies that the employees were trying to or actively leaking unannounced gameplay features of GTA 6, which is a bit doubtful for two reasons. Firstly, the workers themselves have previously denied the allegation of leaking sensitive information and secondly, nothing was actually leaked which couldn’t clearly have been the case if more than 30 employees really wanted to give away in-game stuff.
This official statement from Rockstar comes less than 24 hours after the news that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed investigation against the company due to it’s possible violation of union rights.
Also, despite Rockstar’s new official statement, the whole incident is far from over as the company is already hit with a legal claim shortly after the firings of employees and the UK Government will also likely see through the entire situation in the form of investigative actions and more.
Overall, the current situation can certainly put a stain on Rockstar’s reputation as a company in more ways than one which wouldn’t be desirable for obvious reasons, especially at a time when the entire world is waiting for the upcoming Open World behemoth GTA 6 which is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26, 2026.
