Rockstar Games’ western saga, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, may still have, according to a newly discovered investigation, hidden its most elaborate secret right out in broad daylight. The community that has taken up the mantle of solving this puzzle, the fans at RedDeadMysteries subreddit, dubbed it the “Spider Dream Mystery,” and stems from a series of complex engravings and otherwise physical assets that in all reality have not been recognized for over five years.
On the trail near Cornwall Kerosene & Tar, the players noticed a telegraph pole having a unique spider engraving. The trail suddenly gained pace after discovering that a spider web at the end of the pole snags a feather-object defined internally in the game files as “spiderdream”-at certain intervals from noon to midnight in the game.Deduced from this, players now treat the spider engraving as a literal map overlay-the same principle applied when players deciphered the game-famous panoramic map puzzle.
Spider dreams were located within the other seven concrete poles following the first locating of pole one, where leg links of the spider imprint matched geographies of New Hanover, Ambarino, and Lemoyne. It doesn’t get clearer since players started getting involved in the environment themselves, shooting specific poles in the sequence suggested by the map overlay reveals hidden cardinal directions and symbols, including “N”, “W”, and “NW.” Some are accompanied by a glyph that appears to represent a guitar, leading investigators toward Fort Wallace and the northern regions of Spider Gorge.
The trail might be cold at the moment, but this discovery reignites disputes on how Rockstar designs their philosophy. Due to the trigger complexities, some old players argue that this could be a remnant-cumbersome systems in the game code but unlinking a final reward. Others refer to the well-known Mount Chiliad mystery in Grand Theft Auto V that clearly demonstrates Rockstar’s build-up of long-term mysteries that would take years of collaboration to solve. For now, the hunt continues as players try to unravel the defeat of the last string of symbols.
