Neidfyre is out, and it feels very inspired in games like Darkest Dungeon, and for fans of dark fantasy titles mixed with complex tactical combat this is a game you should try out. The artist behind it, @hou_jae04, really outdid themselves in the creation of every visual asset, and this multicultural Asian team seems to be doing something amazing. This game focuses primarily in one versus one battles between different classes and creatures, all of them looking quite varied at first glance, and there is more to discover while playing the game.
Neidfyre looks fire
Your journey through Neidfyre is filled with tons of foes that will stand in your way, the only way to deal with them is your own planning and tactics. Battles happen in a turn based way, and when you analyze the fact that its just one versus one, this is going back to the old formula imposed by the first Dragon Quest title, which also had similar limitations in mind. This is quite interested because it feels like we are going back full circle, an indie game held back by the ties of 80s game design, something that isn’t wrong at all.
It even feels like a breath of fresh air to games that often hold your hand and expect you to always follow what you are being told. We need to cut down with this sort of formulas because they are making people afraid of experimenting and trying things out. Games are meant to be self expression, both in the art that goes behind the craft of making one, to the point of even playing one. Some people might approach games in different ways than others, and there really isn’t a wrong way on how, each person has its own tactics and Neidfyre welcomes anyone who hungers for challenge.
