Marathon Art Director, Joseph Cross, seems to have mismanaged a ton of what was happening with the artistic vision of the game and just left. Either that or Bungie didn’t even give him a chance to do things the right way which cause the controversies surrounding the game in the first place. It is crazy to see a once renowned name just get dragged down to the depths of gaming hell and even be compared to companies like EA Games and Activision. I wouldn’t like to be Bungie in the position they are in, much less to be in the relation they currently hold with Sony.
Marathon will bomb
It is inevitable, but it feels like things are just going to get worse from now on, and it will probably never release as a game because as it was mentioned before, funding has been cut for any sort of marketing in the project. When marketing is down things only get worse because games often fail to reach the target demographics and other potential users that might get into it. Marathon is a series of game that was meant to bring something new to the world of shooters, but now it has been converted into something that follows trends.
The current trend of the day seems to be extraction shooters, a genre that I still struggle to properly understand. It feels like it merely exists for the gimmick rather than providing something actually valuable, like making an entire genre out of a game mode similar to how MOBAs did in the past before they went extinct. I don’t know what public this will appeal to, because the people playing this definitely never played the original Marathon in their lives because they consider it too old, but too bad for them, they are missing out in some fine retro games that aged like wine.
