It looks like Hideo Kojima‘s upcoming horror game OD may be even more eccentric than all of his earlier works, cause in his own words, it required him to change his usual approach for making videogames in fundamental ways. In a recent interview with ananweb (as tranlated by Automaton), Kojima has revealed several development insights on OD and why it’s “challenging” to make:
“I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out. We’ve created stealth games and delivery games which were unlike anything before, but system-wise, they were similar to other games,” Kojima stated. “This time, we’re trying to change the service model from the ground up, so it should be quite challenging.
He also added that the Knock teaser trailer for OD, which was released in September this year, does contain multiple hints for the horror title which will come out at some point in the future.
“We’ve packed the trailer full of hints, so if you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out,” Kojima said.
OD or what is previously known as Overdose, had reportedly been in development for many years and had a massive leak back in 2022 where a two minute-long leaked gameplay footage appeared on Youtube which also featured Death Stranding’s Mama (played by Margaret Qualley). And it was in 2023 when Kojima officially revealed that the game would be called OD and will possibly be highly divisive, saying players would “either love it or hate it”.
OD has also received several setbacks in it’s development as filming for the game got delayed till next year due to the 2024–2025 SAG-AFTRA video game strike and the death of Ubo Kier, who was set to star in the upcoming game, passing away at the age of 81 on November 23 this year.
Recently, it was also revealed that Eidos Montreal had worked with Kojima Productions on OD for around a year before some of the devs were asked to move to Japan.
