Final Chapter of Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Approaches Title Lock

Square Enix is reportedly close to making an internal decision on the official title for the much-anticipated final installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Following the commercial success and positive critical reception of Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and the recent launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this year, the creative team is moving forward with the main development plan for the final chapter. While this internal progress—specifically locking in a final title—marks a significant milestone for the large project, sources familiar with the process indicate that fans can expect to wait a while longer before any official announcements are made.

The naming convention for this reimagined project has been a key point of discussion since the first game used a thematic subtitle instead of a simple number. Remake set the new direction and foundational setting, while Rebirth provided strong hints about the core story and character arcs that shaped the saga’s middle section. Therefore, the third, untitled game carries the heavy responsibility of defining the conclusion not just in story, but also in concept. Its name is expected to capture the trilogy’s overall theme. Given the scope and scale needed to faithfully adapt the final part of the original game’s storyline—which includes some of the most iconic and pivotal moments in gaming history—this internal title lock suggests that a clear structural plan is being finalized for the remaining years of development.

Although the production process seems to be on track, experts in large-scale AAA game development know that internal milestones do not always mean public information will follow immediately. The reveal of a definite title, which is often timed with the major marketing campaign, is likely still linked to an expected future release window. Considering the significant number of character models, environment assets, and complex combat systems that need to be created or improved, a multi-year gap between Rebirth and the final game seems reasonable. This timeline would align with the production pace set by the first two installments, ensuring that the final product meets the high quality standards established by its predecessors.

Interestingly, reports have also mentioned a simpler release strategy for the concluding game. One source suggested that the launch process might be smoother for players regarding initial platform access. This implies that the development team aims to reduce any difficulties at the time of release. This information may ease concerns among players about potential lengthy platform exclusivity, hinting at a more straightforward approach to platform availability shortly after the initial release. The conclusion of the entire Final Fantasy VII saga, which will have taken nearly a decade by the time it wraps up, stands as one of the most ambitious and significant projects in modern role-playing game history. The final title coming closer to being confirmed marks an important step toward that monumental moment.
