World of Warcraft seems to have a total of 9 million subscribers, but this is just based on information given by a musical video. The data isn’t precise, but coming from an official source we can confirm that maybe Blizzard revealed themselves to the public. This is rather unexpected for many, as companies actually love keeping these figures secret to ensure people just jump in regardless. These numbers however are very small for what’s actually needed, since there has been more people playing the game in more older eras of it, the growth does not really match what it should.
World of Warcraft got big but not quite
World of Warcraft is the MMO that defined MMOs due to its huge popularity with the masses and media itself. The Warcraft franchise is also big, but most people really know more about it thanks to this game than the original entries that came alongside games like Diablo and Starcraft. However, these numbers aren’t really impressive, by 2025, there should be at least a double of players still paying a subscription. This is however not the case, and growth has stagnated for a variety of reasons that elude many of us, maybe World of Warcraft fans can give a better voice on what has happened.
Between expansions that don’t quite cut it, to other situations like rampant bot problems in the game, people have gotten tired and decided to migrate to private servers that respect their time and also provide something for free. Turtle WoW is one of the biggest private servers and they are currently in a feud against Blizzard which claims that they are profiting from IP that does not belong to them, which is true. If Turtle WoW didn’t have a cash shop, perhaps World of Warcraft would be pressured to be a better game than Turtle WoW.
