Many developers agree that Valve has a monopoly problem, the company behind the Steam client and Steam itself is definitely one of the biggest places where people go and get their digital games. This can be a problem, as it pretty much squashes any other sort of healthy competition going on in the market, however, it makes sense that Valve has such power in the industry, they were one of the first ones to do the moon landing sort to speak. Regardless, this does not make things right or fair, and something should be done so everyone can actually have a chance of distributing games, perhaps even allow developers to do it themselves.
Valve has a Monopoly problem
It is true that the PC gaming giant is having tons of control over the industry, and to an unhealthy degree. However the other big options aren’t better, the only site that can provide something better than Valve does exist however, and those are GOG. GOG, unlike Steam, allows you to actually own what you buy, since ownership of what’s digital should also be respected. There’s a ton of problems in the world already, and one of them is the fact that we are pretty much living in a world where we can only subscribe to things rather than acquire them.
Games suffer from the same issue unless you get them from GOG, there’s many reasons why people go their own way to get the games for free however, and one of them is ownership. Sometimes people will even buy the game and then get it for free through other means, but this does not happen often, the Valve monopoly harms developers because the cost to push a game and see it succeed is rather steep, not to mention that they don’t take any action against “AI” slop either, unlike other shops.
