Treyarch Issues Formal Assurances on Black Ops 7 Matchmaking

The game developer had its way to a formal statement clarifying the current SBMM controversy in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, meant to appease players of the game and its core multiplayer experience through a direct statement involving social media. Going through all this, the studio was humble enough to acknowledge the widespread “conversations” that have characterized the player community, putting solid reassurance on how lobbies get populated by players-basing on all of this by trying to put distance between its main playlists for the game and the controversial SBMM model that has been a huge cause for frustration by the community in the recent years.

We've been keeping an eye on Multiplayer matchmaking conversations and want to assure everyone of a few things:

➡️ All of our Open Playlists use Open Matchmaking and Persistent Lobbies and we remain committed to that approach.

➡️ Quick Play uses the same Open Matchmaking, where…

Thus, the Playlists in Black Ops 7 will only “minimally” consider player skill when forming matches because the developer promised the commitment about it. The playlists will continue the use of persistent lobbies, in which players remain in the same group between matches, long requested to develop the social context and less hyper-competitiveness that this environment causes. The same Open Matchmaking concept applies to Quick Play; thus, skill is a tiny factor in its processes. Furthermore, the developer confirmed deploying a technical solution for a problem within the Quick Play that was overriding player selection.

Remember that while SBMM creates the perception of all casual public matches being transformed into highly competitive, ranked games, statistics seem to indicate that, more often than not, the SBMM assists retention rather than repels it. For Treyarch, it seems an effort to win goodwill by way of frankness on the system, even as the game continues to receive mixed views on several fronts. Critics praise the Black Ops 7 multiplayer experience, which includes map design and game modes; however, the title meets this difficult launch tagged primarily with extensive review bombs for the single-player campaign.

Such has been the depravity of the announcement as decreed by Treyarch, and yet, still doubt persists within the community. The idea that a hidden aspect of the feature may indeed be implemented remains in the mind of some players. The very nature of a live-service title ensures that the experience is not static and will evolve over time, while time will show whether indeed the system does deliver the promise of minimal skill consideration. Anticipation is high for the next and very significant content drop, which takes place on November 20, and will have the map Nuketown back into the roster rotation.
