In a recent interview with the Lex Fridman podcast, Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser has said that the Red Dead Redemption series may see another installment at some point in the future, even though he’d obviously feel quite sad for not being able to take part in the development process. In the interview, the former Rockstar helm has admitted that he has stronger feelings for the Red Dead Redemption series than GTA, which he has helped shape for more than two decades.
“Of course, letting go of something I worked on in one way or another for like 20 odd years, and wrote on them for the last 10 or 11 that came out, wrote all of them, or you know, lead writer on all of them, whatever it was… letting go of that is a big change. And sad in a way,” Houser stated.
“Because each of the [GTA] games was a kind of standalone story it’s not quite the same as… I think probably it would be in some ways sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that. But again, that will probably happen too. I don’t own the IP. That was part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it.”
One of the biggest hallmarks of nearly all Rockstar titles is their laser focused character driven storytelling that helped shape the identities of those games and made them so much more memorable and unique, beside their gameplay. And Rockstar Co-Founder and writer Dan Houser is one of the reasons for the incredible character-centric storytelling and the sharp-tongued social commentary that’s present in all the defining Rockstar titles, from GTA 4 to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar’s Open World odyssey, 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is reportedly set to get a next-gen update sometimes in this year along with a Switch 2 release. The next-gen update will allow the game to take full advantage of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S which will result in the game looking and running even better on those consoles.
