HYKE: Northern Light(s) is a new game that came out for PC some days ago and it seems to be struggling because many people don’t seem to get into the idea of 2D top down RPGs of the olden days. People are criticizing it harshly and unfairly based on biases and lack of proper understanding of how the game works too, they are too comfy in their triple A bubble and unable to understand how indie game development works. Alas, many indie games have been unfairly criticized in the past, perhaps the only proper criticism to have against this one is that its quite expensive, but if you have the cash to spare it might be what you seek.
HYKE: Northern Light(s) is on a discount
HYKE: Northern Light(s) feels similar to the newer Ys title that came out recently, Ys Nordics, with its character changing mechanics there’s tons of shenanigans to be had. Imagine if they made Ys X Nordics into a classic retro styled 2D Top Down RPG like the older Ys games, and this is pretty much what you would get. HYKE: Northern Light(s) tells us the story of a young witch in a quest to uncover the truth of a world in ruins that was caused by her own mother, to do this, she will explore forbidden areas alongside her partners.
The partners mechanic is quite interesting, as you can swap out characters and adapt to the environment you currently are in, if you need to fight against certain foes, perhaps there’s a party member that can perform better than others. The usual RPG fare is here, but the twist is that it can also double as some sort of cozy game, the camping elements are well thought out and perhaps the best part of the entire game. If you really are interested in this nice little experiment, you can get it now on Steam while the discount lasts.
