For huge multiplayer titles there’s always the potential problem of in-game servers getting overloaded and eventually breaking down by the sheer weight of player numbers, especially during launch week where player counts are usually the highest. However, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has stated that it’s going to be impossible for Borderlands 4’s online systems to fail and has also issued an open challenge to all players joining in the game to see if they can overload the servers by sheer numbers.
“So here it is… I’m throwing down the gauntlet: you cannot break our on-line infrastructure through too many players. You can’t. Hacking doesn’t count, btw. Just concurrent players in the game is what we’re looking for. Play cooperatively; jump into random people’s games; log in and out a bunch of times at peak hours… Whatever you can fairly and reasonably do within the game to add pressure to the system, do it!”
“And, whether the game breaks or not, you will get this killer “Break Free” content pack for FREE for jumping in this weekend and adding to the numbers. I’m not sure if it’s required or not, but to be sure I would make sure you have a SHiFT account to be certain to get the reward.”
As an opportunity to encourage more players to try out Borderlands 4, Gearbox is offering the Break Free Pack to anyone who plays the game from September 12-14 which includes 1 Vault Hunter Skin usable by Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe, and 1 Legendary Ripper Shield, which scales to your Vault Hunter level when redeemed (with a minimum of Lvl 25). Overall the free contents seem to offer a nice boost for players, so they’re certainly worth it if you love the Borderlands series of looter shooters.
Borderlands 4 is currently at a ‘mixed’ review rating on Steam cause of numerous performance issues and technical problems. The general complaints from players are centered around the game’s unexpectedly low performance even on high-end PCs with reports of severe crashes that are stopping the game from even starting up.
