A new chapter in the popular Batman: Arkham series seems to be developing. A sequel to the successful Batman: Arkham Shadow is reportedly in the works. Actor Mark Rolston, who plays Commissioner Gordon in the franchise, revealed this casually. At Fan Expo Chicago 2025, Rolston said, “We’re about to start another one of those; I play Commissioner Gordon,” while discussing his different roles in video games. This comment has led to much speculation about a new title entering early production stages.
The first game, Batman: Arkham Shadow, was created by Camouflaj, a part of Oculus Studios, and quickly became one of the fastest-growing VR games on the market. By early February 2025, it had attracted over a million players. This shows its wide appeal. The game also received widespread critical acclaim, with an average OpenCritic score of 86 and a 100% recommendation rate from reviewers. These numbers make it a premier title that Meta, the parent company of Oculus Studios, would want to continue funding and supporting.
Considering the usual four-year development cycle for a project of this size, the sequel could be released sometime between late 2028 and late 2029. Oculus Studios is likely the developer, so the new game is expected to be exclusive to VR and available only on Meta headsets. This would follow the same distribution model as its predecessor.
It is crucial to note that this project is different from the rumored return of Rocksteady Studios to the Batman franchise. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Rocksteady is planning a new single-player game, but it is unclear if this title will be part of the “Arkhamverse.” In contrast, the Arkham Shadow sequel is an ongoing effort by Camouflaj, directly continuing the story and success of the first game. The confirmation from a key actor, though unofficial, strongly suggests that a new installment is coming soon.
