Ubisoft appears to be taking its long-running Ghost Recon franchise in a new direction. The company has officially announced a return to the first-person perspective for the upcoming game. This change follows an internal meeting and marks a significant shift from the third-person shooter format used in recent titles, especially in 2017’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands and 2019’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. While the series is now linked to over-the-shoulder tactics gameplay, it’s notable that the original 2001 Ghost Recon was a first-person game throughout.
Reports about this new project, named “Ovr,” first emerged in June 2025 and have since gained traction. At the most recent shareholder meeting on July 10, Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot confirmed that a Ghost Recon project is in development. He mentioned that the company wants to build on existing experiences and take advantage of future releases, specifically referencing The Division and Ghost Recon.
This announcement is significant for the French video game publisher, especially since development of The Division 3 has been public knowledge since 2023. Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet later confirmed in the meeting that the new game will be a first-person shooter, unlike its predecessor, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
After mixed reactions to Wildlands and Breakpoint, both of which featured large open-world third-person formats, the series is at a turning point. The reported return to first-person could bring new life to the series and attract new fans. However, Ubisoft will likely want to avoid the problems that emerged with Ghost Recon Frontline, a previous attempt to reintroduce a first-person shooter aspect. While fans eagerly await updates on the new Ghost Recon title, interest is also growing for other rumored Ubisoft projects, such as a possible remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Future releases, especially at major industry events, will be watched closely for more information.
