Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed TV series has been officially greenlit and will be headed by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who were previously showrunners on DMZ and Halo. Both will serve the project as it’s creators, showrunners as well as executive producers alongside creative inputs from Ubisoft.
The official synopsis of the tv series states the following: “Assassin’s Creed live-action series is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions: one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, the other fighting to preserve free will. The series follows characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”
This is pretty much the main historical framework behind the games as well as part of what makes Assassin’s Creed both intriguing and compelling in unique ways. And it looks like the tv adaptation will stay true to the roots of the series in as faithful way as possible which is definitely great.
“Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith,” Patino and Wiener stated.
“It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance,” they continued. “But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species, when those connections break.”
“When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways,” stated Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President, Scripted Series. “Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.
“Guided by the deft hands of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has carefully crafted an epic adventure that both honors the legacy of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and invites longtime fans and newcomers alike to experience the thrill of the Brotherhood as never before.”
It clearly seems that the makers of the series really understand what makes Assassin’s Creed stand out both as a videogame franchise while also keeping it relevant from a cultural perspective which is definitely encouraging for the soon-to-be adaptation.
