NetEase Games brings a new level of customization to its top-rated superhero brawler, Marvel Rivals, with the launch of Season 3 on July 11th. What’s new for players is a cosmetic type to look out for: “accessories.” This new cosmetic type, announced on X, is set to enhance character design, enabling players to further customize their go-to heroes in the heat of battle.
In contrast to the more extreme skins that completely transform a character’s look, these accessories are character-specific and give something low-key but distinctive flair. Early ones are a sign of the lighter hand of this design, with Spider-Man getting the ability to wear an MJ Plush on his belt, and the always-iconoclastic Deadpool getting a wee Deadpool. It is this specific design that makes it so that although players have the ability to personalize their selected fighter, the visual identity of the hero overall is intact.
Perhaps the most striking thing about this new system is how open it is. In contrast to being sold with premium currency, these hero-exclusive accessories are available via dedicated play. Quick Match and Competitive players alike will be able to gain “Accessory Points,” a brand-new game currency specifically earmarked for this cosmetic type. The points are what let players purchase highly sought-after accessories, giving a satisfying progression system to casual play.
This look is not just giving a new motivation for play but also making a cosmetic customisation more accessible, being consistent with an engaged player-reward system. The game development team has also noted that additional effort has been made to apply the appearance of these items so that they remain well visible and easily accessible to the players without adding visual clutter where it is not needed in high-intensity combat. All this meticulousness says much about compliance with looking good and easier gameplay.
