Since it’s release, Civilization 7 hasn’t quite turned out to be the critical and commercial success that developer Firaxis aimed with the game, as clearly evident by it’s current ‘mixed’ player review rating on Steam along with much lower player counts than Civilization 6 and even than the decade old Civilization 5. But the developers are certainly working to improve the game based on the players’ feedback as their latest patch for Civilization 7, which is out today, finally deals with one of the most core complaints in the strategy title which is the issue of units getting reset during the game’s Age Transitions.
Firaxis Games has also released a ‘Developer Update’ video sharing their vision for the July 2025 Update of Civilization 7 and how it changes the gameplay in various ways, check it out below:
The Age Transition feature in Civilization 7 is currently seen as one of the game’s biggest drawbacks especially with the players’ units being reset by the game after each Transition, and so the new patch 1.2.3 is set to introduce a whole new feature into the game called Continuity Setting that will allow players’ units to remain locked in place as Civilization 7 shifts into the next age. This much needed feature will likely improve the game in a number of ways as it’ll surely reduce frustrations from most players who had trouble with the game’s Age Transition resetting their units in the past.
Also, the devs have added a new Countdown feature that will notify players 10 turns in advance about an upcoming Age transition in the game which will further help simplifying the entire process.
Plus, the new update also adds an Auto-Explore function as well as a new commander, Trung Nhi and tons of other smaller and quality of life improvements that will help enhance your gameplay experience significantly. So if you were previously dissatisfied with Civilization 7, give the game another try with the latest update as it can offer a drastically different gameplay experience.
Civilization 7 was released on February 11 for the Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One and Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and the PC platform (which includes both macOS and Linux). A VR port of the game will be available in spring 2025 for the Quest 3 and 3S platform, but no price or specific release date has been announced as of yet.
