Gearbox Software’s successor to its next big game, Borderlands 4, is out this October on Nintendo Switch 2. Its expected performance and features were revealed officially by studio head Randy Pitchford recently. The fifth main game of the series, Borderlands 4 is the largest installment yet. Based on Unreal Engine 5 with ray tracing, the game will be a significant technical challenge for Nintendo’s latest console.
Pitchford vowed on Twitter that the Switch 2 iteration of Borderlands 4 will include content parity and will be cross-playable with other platforms. It should play at approximately 30 frames per second. There will be some frame rate loss when in heavy combat or multiplayer, particularly when handheld. This is done to provide a full gameplay experience rather than emphasizing the improved frame rate so that nothing is omitted in the Nintendo version.
One of Switch 2 players’ main features will be that new Joy-Con 2 controllers will be able to toggle into mouse mode. This is a fascinating new control option that can bring precision and fun to a first-person shooter on the hybrid console. Pitchford went on to clarify that even physical copies of Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2 will be a digital download-only title, reminding gamers to ensure that they free up enough space.
Though PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S players will receive Borderlands 4 on September 12th, the Switch 2 will launch on October 3. The cost will be $70, easing previous concerns about shelling out extra. With the emphasis being placed on bringing online co-op and cross-platform play to all platforms, Borderlands 4 aims to bring its signature combination of action, adventure, and RPG to the mainstream market without compromising on its large-scale, loading screen-free world.
