Ubisoft’s new game of history, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, achieved five million players officially, a record within four months only after the international launch in March 2025. Such rapid growth testifies to the favorable reception of the game within the regions and is the sweet bonanza of the publisher after the not so good financial quarter, particularly after the recent poor performance by Star Wars Outlaws.
The path to the attainment of this record began on the right footing. Assassin’s Creed Shadows attracted a million players at the time of launch. This early success propelled it into the second-largest launch in the titanic Assassin’s Creed saga series, smaller only to the titanic 2020 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launch. Though five million is mentioned as players and not initial unit sales, subsequent Ubisoft financial releases show the game doing well, justifying that enormous development expense and proving monetary value of the game.
Adding to the excitement of this triumph, Ubisoft posted some player interaction stats on a tweet on X (formerly Twitter). These stats reveal an active player base, over two billion stealth kills overall, traveling over one billion kilometers inside the vast game world, and browsing 38 million in-game pets. Not only are these stats representative of mass player activity, but also desperate interaction with the depth of the game world.
One of the factors contributing to Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ success has been continuous support by Ubisoft since the release of the game. The game itself has already been awarded a big update containing more story content as well as one more ally for the player, which improved gameplay. With the first expansion, “Claws of Awaji,” set to arrive later this year keeping everyone on their toes, more is yet to come. Ubisoft’s consistency with timely released content makes the title always feel up-to-date.
Set in the beautiful feudal landscapes of feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a large geographical shift for Ubisoft’s hit franchise, plunging the player into a new era in history. The new setting, and successful launch and ongoing developer support, has clearly satisfied veteran and newcomer players alike, and is a flagship title from Ubisoft.
