Runescape 3 has a massive issues with microtransactions, it seems that the team behind it wants to do some sweeping changes to fix that. For years now, Runescape 3 suffered from myriads of issues, the biggest one being their microtransactions, some of the most egregious ones in the gaming space. Now, they wanna cut down on them, reduce the gambling but change it with FOMO, while the previous method was actually way more toxic, its still sad to see that they still chase the money. It seems that the greed of Jagex persists, despite it being lessened up a bit, and it truly shows that they will never change their way of being.
Runescape 3 might get better
The damage is already done however, Runescape 3 is pretty much the main spot for whales to flaunt their poor spending habits upon others, the gambling has contributed into making the lives of people worse. Jagex won’t be responsible for the damage changed, after all, they might be making this change just to be updated with European law. It seems as if trouble has been mounting for them legally after sweeping law reforms that occurred in Europe in regards to microtransactions in games.
Hopefully, we can see more positive changes happen in the future, changes that make the live service system work in a healthy way that does not psychologically exploit players, as it has been proved again and again. The reality is that, however, we may never see these changes happen unless Europe decides to iron fist some new regulations in place, if companies fear regulation so much, they should find ethical alternatives to earn that money back. Subscription systems, while antiquated, actually give players a bang for their buck in games like this. They should really try the Final Fantasy 14 approach someday, Old School Runescape does that after all.
