A development that reflects growing overlap between mobile payment technology and gaming, Sony has finally introduced Apple Pay into the native PS5 user interface [first reported by 9to5mac]. The feature, one of the benchmarks for the modernization of PS5 customers’ payment infrastructure, provides for simplified and convenient game and digital content buying right on the console.
For the first time, Apple Pay is available as part of other online payment methods integrated into the console’s checkout system. Previously, PS5 users had to use third-party websites like the PlayStation mobile app or go through the PlayStation Store via a web browser. The new integration saves the additional step, providing a more streamlined Apple Pay experience.
It’s impressively simple: at checkout on the PS5, users are able to pick Apple Pay, which prompts an on-screen display of a QR code. It can be scanned using an iPhone or iPad and opens up the familiar Apple Pay screen, with the option to select a card and approve payment using Face ID or Touch ID. This has been made possible due to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates, introducing Apple Pay feature to include QR-based authorization in third-party such as the PS5.
Although the checkout process adds an extra step beyond the utilization of a stored credit card, it offers a convenient option for users who frequently use Apple’s payment system. In particular, users of an Apple Card might appreciate this modification, as Apple’s credit card rewards with 2% Daily Cash back on purchases. As PlayStation and Xbox game prices climb to astronomical heights, every penny saved counts.
It is currently only on the PS5, but there is rumor that it will be released to the PS4 in the future. It is only available in regions where Apple Pay is supported, 53 countries. In addition to Apple Pay, players on the PS5 can also use Venmo and Cash App, and PayPal, which has been available on PlayStation since the PS3.
This addition of Apple Pay on PS5 reinforces the movement towards mobile and contactless-based payment systems in gaming yet again. As digital sales remain to be the stronghold of the gaming industry, as seen through digital-only Xbox and PlayStation console sales data, Sony’s step towards overhauling the PlayStation Store and payment system is a hint that there is moving towards easy digital buying and making it convenient.
