Game preservation is very important, especially in current times. The Japanese Game Preservation Society has done an amazing job at trying to document and archive everything related to Japanese game media and more. From games to development material, including interviews and history about video games in Japan, they have done some high quality documentaries about each and every aspect. They truly work to the bone in their lab, but unfortunately economic situations caused them to be in critical conditions. Joseph Redon, head of the GPS, claimed that funds aren’t enough to sustain it this year or even in some months.

People might assume that they only take care of console games, but in reality, they have done a ton for everyone in the industry. PC games, and even LaserDisc games have been preserved by them, it would truly be a shame for them to close doors. Nobody knows what could happen to the collection of media in there, media that might not have seen the light of day. Game’s aren’t everything that is valuable there, interviews and development materials are also integral to the history of this industry.

They have done extensive research on the past of this medium, even to the point of going as far as to documenting eroge. For those who wish to ensure the future of gaming is a bright one, ensuring the GPS survives is of utmost importance. They don’t even need anything outrageous monetary wise, just $20 dollars a year to stay afloat. As long as around 400 supporters can do so, we can ensure this massive force in game preservation does not get lost. You can be a supporter too here.

It is sad to see most Japanese gamers not even consider contributing anything to the group that ensures their amazing history remains preserved. It feels as if they would rather want to see their medium and culture disappear before helping in any way.
