Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel now officially in pre-production

The sequel to 2020’s seminal Cyberpunk 2077, previously known as Project Orion and now officially termed by CD Projekt RED as Cyberpunk 2, has currently entered the pre-production phase. The developers themselves made the official announcement as part of their latest financial results, where they also announced that Phantom Liberty, the acclaimed expansion pack for Cyberpunk 2077, has now sold a total of 10 million copies, which is extremely impressive for an expansion.

The devs have also confirmed that 96 out of CD Projekt’s 730 developers are now actively working on the sequel to Cyberpunk2077, while the majority of them are involved in the full production stage of The Witcher 4 which is the upcoming epic fantasy RPG game from CD Projekt RED.

“Several weeks ago the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase,” CD Projekt stated. “As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to pre-production.”

However, it will be a good while before you can revisit Night City as the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 can take about 5 long years to finally arrive, as hinted by CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski.

“I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average,” Nowakowski said.

“Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique, and there are many variables that influence the final outcome. So I will not lead you into specific years, but yes, this is pretty much how it looks.”

And although the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be here for a long while, Night City can still offer tons of memorable and immersive gameplay experiences that can keep anyone occupied for that time.
