Alix Wilton Regan Speaks in Disappointment Over Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Reception

The world of video game design and release has a tendency to create a complex fabric of expectation, criticizing criticism, and gaming response. Occasionally, though, the emotional price which actors pay in order to bring life to these virtual worlds becomes starkly clear as it has for Alix Wilton Regan, a veteran voice actress for Inquisitor in the Dragon Age franchise [via IGN]. Regan openly expressed her deep sadness concerning the backlash Dragon Age: The Veilguard attracted, something that hit home dearly throughout the gaming community.

Published in October of 2024, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was between a rock and a hard place. While generally positive critical reception, the game was unfortunately the target of “review bombing” – an attempt where negative user reviews are strategically coordinated to drive down a title’s overall score. This co-ordinated effort unquestionably had a bearing on the title’s commercial success as it seriously under-performed to Electronic Arts’ early expectations. The publisher had originally targeted around three million players in the first quarter of the game, but The Veilguard only managed to achieve half that at some 1.5 million players.

The effect of this underperformance has landed hard on BioWare, the creators of the very popular Dragon Age series. Production on The Veilguard has been put on hold, resulting in a string of bad layoff for the developers. In addition, numerous developers who were originally assigned to The Veilguard have since been reassigned to other games, most notably the very popular next Mass Effect game.

Regan’s sincere expression of regret is a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between game designers and their creations, and the often unpredictable impact of popular sentiment on the individuals who put their talent and energy into these grand digital sagas. Her testimony offers a glimpse behind the curtain of the human side of game design, highlighting the personal investment taken by the individuals who create our interactive universes.
