Clair Obscur

Clair Obscur sold 1 million copies, best JRPG of the year

Clair Obscur was a massive success, selling more than 1 million copies is truly astounding. This proves that smaller and passionate teams can do the same or better than triple A corporations without soul. People wish for games that are made with quality and standards in mind, and it has been shown again and again that triple A publishers don’t want to give that. Therefore, people now depends on the indie scene to enjoy video games for real. While it might be farfetched to say that Sandfall Interactive is an indie group, it does clearly resemble Square during the 90s. We at Infinite Start will cover this new milestone.

Clair Obscur is a big hit

I predict that the PC market, and the console market too, will be flooded with a bunch of turn based games that will try to copy the ideas from Clair Obscur. This is detrimental, since it tends to burn people on the genre quickly. Most of the time, clones fail to understand what makes the original source be good in the first place. This has happened with Souls likes, everyone just copying the same formula, and nobody managing to nail it.

Back in the day, people did what they wanted and didn’t really follow any trend on consoles. Consoles in the 90s were the bed of creativity in the medium, and they truly brought the wildest of ideas to life. Clair Obscur is a clear love letter to Final Fantasy, more specifically, Final Fantasy 8, which was its main inspiration.

The dynamic turn based system is taken directly from Final Fantasy 8, sometimes you could actually engage with limit breaks in an action-ish way. What matters the most with Clair Obscur however is that the game seems to have a clear identity of its own. Passion works always triumph over soulless clones.
