Wizards of the Coast Cuts 90% of Sigil Dungeons & Dragons VTT Development Team

Wizards of the Coast Cuts 90% of Sigil Dungeons & Dragons VTT Development Team

Wizards of the Coast cut 90% of the Sigil, the Dungeons & Dragons Virtual Tabletop (VTT), development team after significantly scaling back the project scope. With around 30 developers being let go, Sigil is no longer a standalone product but will instead be incorporated into D&D Beyond as a limited function.

A Promising Concept That Never Quite Lived Up

First launched in 2023, Sigil was meant to be a cutting-edge VTT experience, with Unreal Engine 5-rendered graphics, bespoke avatars, and interactive battle maps. Wizards of the Coast envisioned it as the Minecraft or Roblox of tabletop RPGs, but its buggy launch on February 27, 2025, left players disappointed.

Problems like glitchy combat, incomplete features, and terrible customization kept it from catching fire. The game never quite lived up to what it could have been, leaving one wondering if it even had one—something since vindicated by the massive layoffs.

Sigil Will Remain a Bare-Bones Feature in D&D Beyond

In a leaked emailed memo sent to Polygon, Dungeons & Dragons Senior VP Dan Rawson justified the move as follows:

“After several months of alpha testing, we’ve concluded that our aspirations for Sigil as a large, standalone game with a distinct monetization path will not be realized.”

Instead, a small team will maintain Sigil as a basic D&D Beyond feature, with previously developed content released at no extra cost. While the project isn’t completely dead, it is now essentially on life support, with no major expansions planned.

A Frustrating End to a Graphically Stunning Project

Despite its gorgeous Unreal Engine 5 visuals and lighting, Sigil failed to be a complete and working experience. With not having all the major D&D races and class abilities, and terrible integration with D&D Beyond, most players were left frustrated.

For laid-off employees, Wizards of the Coast supposedly is offering severance pay, career transition resources, and even potential internal positions. For fans of Dungeons & Dragons, however, Sigil’s failure represents another step down the path to the failure of digital tabletop promise.
