In a recent interview with Variety, The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann has hinted that we might never see another entry to the acclaimed series of games from developer Naughty Dog. The lengthy interview was primarily centered around The Last of Us TV series, however near the end he was asked whether there will ever be a third Last of Us game, to which he responded:
“I was waiting for this question,” he stated, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
Druckmann’s comment is truly disheartening for anyone who’s a fan of the series and was waiting for another installment, however if a third game was indeed in development, it would’ve made the news a long time ago especially considering that it’s been nearly 5 years since The Last of Us Part 2 had came out.
Of course he didn’t outright deny the possibility of a third game but it surely seems that a third Last of Us title may not be in the foreseeable future, according to Druckmann at least. This means it’s clearly better not to hold out further hopes for another one, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise for many at this point.
However, Druckmann had previously provided sort of a vague hint regarding the possibility of another game, which is during the end of the Grounded 2: Making of The Last of Us Part 2 documentary where he stated that he might just have a concept of going forward with another story in the series:
“I’ve been just thinking about it, ‘is there a concept there?’ And for now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept,” he said at that time.
“But recently, that’s changed, and I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
But from the latest interview, it clearly seems that there may not be a third game after all which contradicts his previous statements about the series’ finality.
Naughty Dog is currently working on a new single player title for the PS5 named Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
