Valve Rumored to Release Premium Deckard VR Headset in 2025

Valve is said to be releasing its much-anticipated Deckard VR headset by late 2025, as per recent leaks. The Deckard will be an untethered, standalone VR headset that boasts premium content, which makes it Valve’s most expensive VR headset to date — and it comes with a massive cost of approximately $1,200.

The Deckard headset was first leaked in 2022 as a spinoff of Valve’s successful Index VR headset release in 2019. While the Index needed to be powered by a powerful gaming PC, the Deckard headset is rumored to operate on its own using a custom SteamOS build — the same operating system that drives Valve’s Steam Deck handheld console. This would allow gamers to run VR games natively on the headset without requiring extra hardware.

Several people have confirmed that Valve is aiming to release new standalone, wireless VR headset (codename Deckard) by the end of 2025. The current price for the full bundle is set to be $1200. The news is brought by trusted Valve insider Gabe Follower, who says that the Deckard will provide the most immersive VR experience without compromising anything. The headset will supposedly come with new VR controllers, codenamed Roy, and pre-installed games or demos to demonstrate its capabilities. Even with the premium price, Valve is likely to be selling every unit at a loss, indicating that the device will carry top-of-the-line hardware in order to rival the Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro.

If the $1,200 rumored price is accurate, the Deckard would be well over double the price of mid-tier VR headsets such as Meta Quest 3S or PlayStation VR2. However, its wireless capability and that it has the capability to run flat-screen Steam games on a virtual giant screen could make it a premium product.

The company hasn’t officially announced the Deckard headset yet, so the news must be taken with a grain of salt. Still, with the VR market increasing steadily and Valve still interested in the medium, a new flagship headset is certainly a possibility. If rumors are to be believed, however, the Deckard might be Valve’s largest virtual reality foray since the Index — but at a price that perhaps only die-hard VR enthusiasts would be willing to pay.
